Can both Essential and Fragrance Oils be Natural?

Have you ever wondered if both essential oil and fragrance oil can be natural or naturally made?

What's the difference between the oils and how are they made?

We researched these questions and have the 4-1-1 for you!

Essential Oils

Essential Oils are extracted from plants, herbs, and flowers through a process called steam distillation. The natural element is heated until the gas is released then the vapor is condensed into a liquid. Check out the process of making lavender essential oil in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78RZI3j9NP8.

The one drawback to essential oils is that there is a limited amount of them because, unfortunately, not everything in nature can produce essential oil. Items such as strawberries, vanilla, and or one of my favorites lilacs.

Fragrance Oils

Natural Fragrance oils are also made in a laboratory but rather than being made from synthetic materials they are created by isolating one of the natural aromatic components from a complex scent such as that of an orange or rose. These single scents are called isolates.

When purchasing oils, knowing the source and whether they are nature-based or sourced naturally is essential. There are several nature-identical and isolate fragrance oils available today because of the demand for products free of phthalates.

“Phthalates are a group of chemicals used in hundreds of products, such as toys, vinyl flooring and wall covering, detergents, lubricating oils, food packaging, pharmaceuticals, blood bags and tubing, and personal care products, such as nail polish, hair sprays, aftershave lotions, soaps, shampoos, perfumes, and other fragrance preparations.”

To find out more about phthalates, check out this article by the CDC.

Purity of Oils

Not all oils, either essential or fragrance, are created equal; it’s imperative to check the purity standards with your provider. The standard of purity, origin, and additional testing should be noted on the product, and you’re looking for a 100% pure product from natural sources.

The provider where we purchase the fragrances and essential oils have this standard for both essential and fragrance oils:

“They’re 100% pure and come from natural sources unless otherwise stated. To ensure that purity, they’re spot tested using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GS/MS). Those tests involve separating, identifying, and quantifying the complex mixtures of molecules in oils to find possible adulteration.”
