4 Benefits of Natural Ingredient Soap
Have you wondered what all the fuss is about natural ingredient soap?
Is there that much difference in a bar of soap?
Let's take a look at the differences.
💜Glycerin, soothing emollient
Soap used to be all-natural until around the turn of the 19th century. Soap makers use a process called saponification, adding oils with lye which produces a combo of soap and glycerin. This combo is fantastic for your skin.
However, commercial soap makers found that glycerin was worth much more money if they separated it and sold it for other cosmetics and even nitroglycerin.
So then they had a problem. The soap base wasn't enough to sell, so commercial soap makers started adding synthetic ingredients, foaming agents, chemical fragrances and even detergents to the soap.
For example, if you see the ingredients sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate that is a detergent and has been prevalent in soaps.
Some bacterial soaps have even been found to have triclosan which the FDA has found:
"…data suggested that long-term exposure to certain active ingredients used in antibacterial products — for example, triclosan (liquid soaps) and triclocarban (bar soaps) — could pose health risks, such as bacterial resistance or hormonal effects."
In the natural ingredient soap that Simply Lavender Farm and other handmade soap makers produce we don't take the glycerin out of the soap.
Glycerin is a humectant that attracts moisture from the air to your skin.
That's why after you wash with a commercial soap bar, your skin may feel dry and itchy.
💜Your skin's important!
Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and the care of it should be a top priority. We've already talked about the benefit of glycerin for your skin as a moisturizer.
Throughout the day, your skin's exposure to chemicals and pollutants can cause irritation and redness. Natural ingredient soaps have no chemicals and many times have exfoliants that help clean out your skin's pores.
💜Ingredients Good Enough to Eat
Natural ingredient soaps consist of oils, butters, goat's milk, and other nutrient-rich ingredients that help you to have healthy skin.
If the base ingredients in soap are the same as what you use for cooking, they certainly should be safe for your body.
Many of the other natural ingredients such as seeds, charcoal, pumice, etc. rarely cause skin irritation but instead benefit the skin with their properties.
💜Essential Oil Fragrances
Essential Oil fragrances have an overpowering scent when you smell them full strength.
However, when mixed into soap, the fragrance turns into a pleasant aroma that doesn't overwhelm the senses.
The natural ingredients that these fragrances are extracted from help to ensure less irritation to your skin.
Also, many of the Essential Oils have additional benefits such as lavender which contains antiseptic properties according to Medical News Today.
These are just a few of the benefits of natural ingredient soaps. Of course, adding fillers and cheaper ingredients would make your bar of soap cost less, but as you can see, the natural ingredients do genuinely make a difference. 💜
